No Smoking Policy

Reviewed by Gov Body: TLP Cttee 9 June 2008
Approved or to amend: Amended and approved
Review date: 2009

Rationale
It is important for our school to have a No Smoking policy because smoking is one of the leading causes of both preventable ill health and premature death in the UK. This policy is based upon best practice regarding Health and Safety at Work and the Northumberland County Council ‘No Smoking’ Policy. The policy also supports campaigns which aim to reduce the 21% of 15 year olds locally who smoke.

The policy recognises the critical role played by the school in educating employees, students, and their families about the dangers of smoking.

Objective
We will ensure that the site is completely smoke free

Aims
  • To inform all adults and students that the site is smoke free
  • To devise appropriate sanctions for those who do not comply with the no smoking rule
  • To provide support and advice to employees who currently smoke but who wish to break the habit
  • To develop a continuing programme to ensure all new members of the school community are made aware that the school has a ‘no smoking’ policy

Process of Consultation
  • November 2005: Draft policy to CLG
  • December 2005: Draft policy to Governors, Staff Working Party and Student Council

How the Policy will be implemented
