Enterprise Week 2007Enterprise Week 2007 - A Huge SuccessOur third annual Enterprise Week took place between the 12th and 16th November 2007. Our aim this year was to spread the message of Enterprise across the school. We aimed to achieve this by staging a host of events for students to participate in. Our aim was to ensure that every student participated in at least one event. Additionally, we tried to create a series of competitions which would be fun for both participants and organisers.By the end of the week, we were confidant that these objectives had been met. All students participated in at least one event. Over a £1000 had been generated and a real buzz developed around school. Most importantly, over 90% of students said they now understood what Enterprise is. Many thanks should go to the following staff in ensuring that events ran smoothly – Miss Coulson, Mr Fraser, Mr Dougherty, Mrs Cook, Mr Murtagh, Miss Fairbridge and Miss Najafi. Thanks to all other staff who contributed throughout the week, as well as all professionals from outside the school community who gave their time. Women in Enterprise: The Apprentice –This competition for girls was a huge success. Student teams from Years 9, 10 and 11 were set the task of raising as much money as possible for Breast Cancer Research. All teams were given £20 and a fundraising pack to help them on their way.The endeavour and determination shown were the highlight of Enterprise Week for many. The girls used an array of fundraising methods including selling merchandise, accessorising their clothes with pink and a host of confectionary sales. In total a staggering £808.96 was raised. The Year 9 team collected £79. The Year 10 team raised £277.56, with the Year 11 team triumphing after gathering a grand total of £462.40. Make Your Mark Challenge -All Year 9 students entered this national competition which tested students Enterprise skills. All students were given the Challenge “Make it work in a Globolocal way”. Students worked in teams of 6 to design an enterprising solution to this problem. Students had 30 seconds to try to impress the judges in an “X-Factor” style presentation. The judges chose nine teams who were all allowed a further two hours to develop their ideas. The judges then chose one team to go forward as KEVI’s representative to the Regional judging panel. The team was Hannah Nowland, Liam Taylor, Shaw Monaghan, Jonny Spencer, Ava Melville and Kay Macdonald. This team had the idea of designing a theme park which had themed rides depicting life in certain developing world countries. The theme being that all profits made on each ride would go towards developing that country. This panel of Regional judges deemed this idea worthy of a place in the Regional final at Lumley Castle. The students have been told that they must prepare a five minute presentation to a packed hall of judges, other finalists and members of the public. We wish them all the best. Please see the Year 9 news page for the group’s account of their day. Dragon’s Den –This competition was for all Year 10 students. Each tutor group was challenged with the task of running their own shoe shining business. Representatives from each year group then had to present their ideas to our very own Duncan Bannatyne – Mr Fraser.10D and 10X received the funding to put their plan into action. Students from 10D and 10X went head to head throughout the week employing extra services to lure the customers. At the end of the week, nearly £250 had been raised with 10X triumphant, turning over £142.44. Read their extract in the Year 10 news page.Make your Money grow –Year 11 Tutor groups were given a £20 note on Monday 12th November with the broad task of making it “grow”. All proceeds would then go towards cutting ticket prices at the Year 11 PROM. Tutor groups employed a range of strategies ranging from selling themselves as slaves to teachers, producing and running a quiz, compiling a range of staff baby photos and running a guess who competition, a sponsored penalty shoot - out and a range of confectionary stools. In total, the Year group raised over £500. Tutor group 11X raised £83.27 to be crowned champions. Trading Up: Celebrity Stock Market –Mr Ironside’s Sixth Form Tutor Group proved to be the most adept at playing the Celebrity Stock Market. Rumours that this is because Mr Ironside has an unhealthy fascination with Heat magazine are strenuously denied!Good Ideas Forum –This forum gave our students an opportunity to participate in an on-line forum with a range of top professionals from the local area. These included –
All forums were well attended with healthy debate taking place. We would like to thank all of the professionals for giving up their time. Design a Logo Competition –Enterprise now has two new logos. Mr Dougherty held a lunchtime class which gave the competitors some clues on how to use a graphics package to design an effective logo.We received a range of super designs from a large number of students. Due to the huge entry, we decided to have a Key Stage 3 logo and a Key Stage 4 logo. The respective winners were Rachel, Hayley and Marie in Year 9 and Tom Oman in Year 10. Science workshop –Dr Philip Rolfe from NPIL came in to school to deliver a presentation on the Pharmaceutical industry. Dr Rolfe talked students through the whole procedure of designing, trialing and selling a drug. In addition, he gave a real insight into the issues that currently surround the Pharmaceutical industry. We would like to thank Dr Rolfe for giving up his time. Enterprise Assemblies –Mrs Cook’s Year 10 Drama class wrote and performed plays about Enterprise. These were very interesting and well put together All students should be applauded for the effort that they put in. Well done!Building Business Links –We are always looking to extend our range of links between school and the community. We currently have a series of reciprocal links with companies like NPIL and MSD. However we are keen to develop further links. Please feel free to contact Andy Clark at school to discuss this further. |
