Youngster Overcomes Tragic Time

Congratulations to Gavin McCran who was crowned the top Young Achiever of 2006 for outstanding achievement.

On Tuesday 5th December at The Chronicle Young Achievers Awards 2006, Gavin McCran in Year 12 won the GCSE Achievement category, as well as the overall award for outstanding achievement, earning himself the title of 'Top Young Achiever 2006' in the region. Gavin not only won two glass trophies and framed certificates, but also a fantastic one year placement with the Newcastle Mobilx Vipers ice-hockey team, working alongside player-coach Rob Wilson.

From a young age, Gavin McCran has had to deal with the trauma of his mum suffering from cancer and yet he was able to take good care of her, as well as pursue his academic studies and sporting achievements.

Sadly, his mum passed away during his GCSE year and, as he has no dad, the 17-year-old also had to face moving home to live with his older sister.

Despite this stressful time, Gavin, of Morpeth, Northumberland, surpassed all expectations and achieved excellent GCSE results, including three As, four Bs and three Cs at The King Edward VI School.

His continued dedication to his studies and his sporting ambition through such a difficult period was a formidable feat and one that should be commended.

Andrew Clark, a teacher at the school, said: "Not long after his mum's death, Gavin organised a fantastic assembly for the whole of Year 11 to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

"He encouraged his peers to join in and even organised a sponsored leg wax for the boys in the year group, which was carried out by the girls.

"This was an amazing achievement by Gavin; raising money for such a positive cause after experiencing such a personal, emotional bereavement."

His friend, Year 13 student, Quintus Dickinson, added: "I have known Gavin from an early age and he has always been an outgoing person.

"When his mother died, to his credit, this didn't change and he is still the same outgoing person I have known for years."
