A £5,000 injection to a Morpeth school radio scheme has all but ensured a second external broadcast can be staged this year. Work will now go ahead on preparing programmes at the King Edward VI School studio for the start of the next school year in September, under the supervision of graphics technician and community education media tutor John White.

Castle Morpeth Borough Council has donated £2000 from its 'Community £xtra' stream while the school has given £2000 from its Northern Way, NEEP and One North East allocation and a further £1000 from its Department for Education and Skills (DfES) enterprise fund.

The cash will pay for licences and equipment for KEVI Radio's five-day broadcast.

Mr White said: "I'm absolutely delighted that our appeal for cash to fund the project has started so well.

"Because of poor local support last year, I started this round of funding applications wondering if our very successful FM broadcast would be repeated.

"However, hefty donations from Castle Morpeth Borough Council, One North East and the DfES have made sure KEVI Radio can transmit again to the town and beyond."

Subject to obtaining the necessary licence from the government's broadcasting regulator Ofcom, the broadcast will begin on Monday, September 24 highlighting Adult Education Week and KEVI Open Evening.

Old Boy Strikes Gold
Former Head Boy Matt Bailey returned to his old school clutching his Sony Gold Award.

The Metro Radio and Magic 1152 producer, who received the prestigious trophy for his work on “The Alan Shearer Testimonial” programme, visited KEVI Radio to meet the current generation of student broadcasters.

Matt, 24, from Stannington, has been working at Metro Radio & Magic since 2004. He was part of a hard working and early rising team which ensured that every seat at St James`s Park had an Alan Shearer mask on it containing directions to the Magic website.

Matt said: "To be honest it's all a bit overwhelming! I've wanted to be in radio since I was a kid, so to receive an award for doing something I enjoy is beyond anything I ever thought would happen!"

He got his chance following a work experience placement on the news team and has gone on to produce numerous programmes for both stations including Alan Robson`s “Night Owls”

Matt, who encouraged KEVI Radio students to follow him into radio, said:
“In my experience the more chances you get to work in radio at a young age the better for your development. It's great to see the set up here and the effort the school is putting in.”

Last September the school station was granted a 5 day Restricted Service Licence (RSL) for the first time. Another licence has been applied for to repeat the 5 mile wide FM broadcast starting on September 24th.

The staff member in charge of KEVI Radio, John White, said: "It`s mainly the same pupils who did the programmes last time so the standard of broadcasting will be high."

John added that the students will again be helped by his friends from the industry who work at the community station Lionheart Radio in Alnwick and Matt Bailey is penciled in as an interviewee for the RSL week.

KEVI Radio Repeat
A Northumberland school-based radio station will return to the FM airwaves - if it can raise £4,500.

KEVI Radio, whose broadcast last September to thousands of Morpeth homes was also heard on line by listeners in Germany, Australia, North America and China, hopes to repeat the initiative this autumn.

Run by The King Edward V1 school students under the leadership of graphics department technician John White, the station currently operates as an internal music and information source.

Said John: "Such was the success of the five-day external broadcast last year that we are going to do it again – but only if we can find the funding."

KEVI Radio Team
John believes that around £4,500 will be needed to hire and buy new equipment and pay for the broadcasting licence from the Government’s radio regulator, Ofcom.

Over the next few months John and his team of volunteers will be contacting potential funding sources ranging from local authorities and business to clubs and societies.

"We believe that our ability to reach an audience in the Morpeth district will be of great interest to would-be advertisers and programme sponsors, " he said.

Acting Head Deobrah Reeman is backing the project. She said: "Last year the broadcast on FM was a huge success, mainly due to the hard work of all the KEVI staff, and we wholeheartedly support any repeat venture."

Featuring pupils and friends of the school working as presenters, the programmes will include a mix of community interviews, specialist music and local information.

The plan is for the broadcast to coincide with the school’s adult learning week which begins on September 24.
