KEVI Rugby - 1st XV

The Rugby season is almost over with only a sevens tournament left before we say goodbye to the rugby pitches and hello to the athletics track. It has been a busy month with the lads hitting a bit of form towards the end. It all started off with a scrappy yet comfortable win against Dame Allans in the quarter final of the cup. The end score was a flattering 47-3 win for KEVI, however, Dame Allans had a lot of players missing on the day.

The next match the lads pitted themselves against their local rivals of the Duchess School, Alnwick. This turned out to be a Jackell and Hyde performance. The first half was a terrible display of discipline by KEVI giving away far too many penalties. We also lost Tom Green in the first half with a broken nose – However, he was no longer a target by opposing teams due to the loss of his lion’s mane of a hair style! All that coach Stewart could add was that broken noses adds character and actually makes you better looking!!
  KEVI Rogby Team
The second half was a completely different story with the KEVI team playing to the game plan and eventually winning the game 27-0. The final try of the match was worthy of play much higher than Schoolboy Rugby with at least 5 phases of play combining forward power and backs finesse. This gave the team the confidence they required going into the cup semi – final against RGS.

The Semi-Final of the cup was a make or break for the season as it was the last fixture of the year. RGS came with a much more physical team and this showed in the opening 25 minutes. They ran in an early try which was on the cards from the first whistle. For most of the first half KEVI were chasing shadows and done extremely well to keep within touching distance by half time. One thing that KEVI had learnt from the season was patience and not to panic when in difficult situations. Richie Stephenson had an excellent day with the boot and soon KEVI had 9 points on the board through excellent kicking. As the bigger RGS pack started to tire, KEVI started to gain more possession and dominated the game in the final quarter of the game. This was highlighted by an excellent individual try by Simon Manley dancing his way through the defence to score by the posts. He obviously learned these moves from his lead role in Westside story! Richie Stephenson slotted the conversion but by the end of the game we were beaten 26-16. This was a respectable result with 13 out of the starting 15 being eligible next year we hope that it has been a valuable learning experience.
