A2 Biology
The year is broken into 2 Units, and a coursework component which accounts for 10% of the A2 grade.
The pupils will have one January (1hr), and one June exam(1hr45) .
Unit 1
Communication and homeostasis—The chemical and electrical control of organisms including nerve impulses and hormonal effects.
Excretion—Focusing on the Kidneys actions.
Photosynthesis—How plants convert and store the suns energy.
Respiration—Formation of ATP from glucose to enable efficient energy release in all organisms.
Unit 2
Cellular control and production of variation—How proteins are made, and the role of genetics in providing differences between organisms of the same species.
Biotechnology—How we manipulate genes, enzymes and microbes in therapeutic and industrial processes.
Ecosystems and sustainability—Energy flow through systems and the recycling of nutrients.
Responding to the Environment—Nervous and hormonal response including the eye, muscle contraction and behavioural responses.
