AS Biology
The year is broken into 2 Units, and a coursework component which accounts for 20% of the AS grade.
The pupils will have one January (1hr), and one June exam(1hr45) .
Unit 1
Cells—structure of different types of cells, the roles of the organelles, how they can specialise and divide.
Exchange and Transport—How organisms move substances through their cells and mass transport systems in plants and animals including heart and lungs.
Unit 2
Biological Molecules—the chemical make-up and behaviour of proteins, fats, sugars and DNA
Enzymes—how enzymes are vital in controlling metabolic processes and respond to changing conditions.
Biodiversity and Classification—The importance of organisms within a habitat and how we decide on how to group them.
Variation, adaptation and evolution—The range of differences between organisms and how this leads to evolution following Darwin’s theory of natural selection.
Human Interactions—How we control our food sources including selective breeding and use of microorganisms.
We currently have a week long Field trip to Loch Lomond in Scotland after the June exam to focus on ecological field work which has been extremely successful.
