Emily Davison Project
In 2008, over 100 students from The King Edward VI School, Newminster Middle School, Chantry Middle School and Dr.Thomlinson C of E Middle School, participated in ‘The Emily Davison Project’, working with The Greater Morpeth Development Trust, Beamish and Woodhorn Museums, as well as with the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering Committee.
The project was enjoyed by all students, and achieved its fundamental aim of teaching young people about the Suffragette period, as well learning about the life of our local heroine, Emily Davison.
During stage one, students visited Woodhorn Museum and delved in to the archives looking at old newspaper footage from the Suffragette period.
They also visited St. Mary’s Church in Morpeth to see the newly restored grave of Emily Wilding Davison and her family.
During stage two, students dressed up in period costume at Beamish Museum, taking on the roles of Suffragettes, Suffragists and members of the Anti-Suffrage Movement. Students participated in a Suffragette rally and took part in a debate, much to the enjoyment of visitors!
The final stagetook place at the annual Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering. Students from The King Edward VI School and Dr.Thomlinson C of E Middle School won first place in the Group Costume Competition, and participated in another Suffragette rally throughout the streets of Morpeth with the support of Beamish Museum.
The King Edward VI School was also the proud winner of the Best Senior History Project.
