Mathematics

Mathematics is thriving at King Edward VI School. It is very successful in terms of examination results. In addition to being a core subject at both KS3 and KS4 it is a hugely popular choice in the sixth form.

In 2008, over 90% of KS3 students achieved a level 5 or above in the KS3 SAT exams.

Our results at GCSE level are above the national average with 78% of our students achieving grade A* - C and 30% achieving an A* or A grade in 2008.

At A2 level, 65% of our students in 2009 achieved a grade A or B and at AS Level, 58% of students achieved an A or B grade.

We also offer Further Mathematics at A Level where all but 1 student achieved an A or B grade at A Level in 2009.

We are committed to providing the best possible Mathematics education to students of all abilities and to this end we have invested time in developing a range of different teaching and learning strategies within the department. We are keen to further develop using ICT, thinking skills and assessment for learning strategies to enhance teaching and learning.

The department has access to bookable ICT suites, a handful of laptops, five interactive whiteboards and every classroom has at least one networked PC and a data projector. All computers are linked to broadband internet and there are various mathematics software packages available to use including AUTOGRAPH.

The strength of the department depends upon its ability to work together and to support each other during periods of change. We are also committed to providing revision classes for students and access to extension material. In this way we have been able to provide a quality education for our students.
