Post-16 Maths

Year 1 Study (AS level)

Students cover 2 Pure Mathematics modules: Core 1 and Core 2 (C1 & C2). They also cover a module in either Statistics (S1) or Decision Maths (D1).

Topics covered in the Pure Maths modules are:
·       Algebra and functions
·       Coordinate Geometry
·       Sequences and Series
·       Differentiation
·       Integration
·       Trigonometry
·       Exponentials and Logarithms
·
Many of the areas met in Pure Maths serve as an important foundation for other branches of mathematics, especially mechanics and statistics.

Topics covered in the Statistics module are:
·       Modelling in probability and Statistics
·       Measures of Location and Dispersion
·       Probability
·       Regression and Correlation
·       Discrete Random Variables
·       Discrete distributions
·       Normal distribution

Many of the ideas in this part of the course have applications in a wide range of other fields, from assessing car insurance costs to evaluating risk due to natural disasters. Many techniques are used widely in sciences and social sciences.

Topics covered in Decision Maths are
·       Algorithms
·       Sorting algorithms
·       Critical path analysis
·       Bipartite graphs
·       Shortest path algorithms
·       Dijkstra’s, Prim’s and Kruskal’s algorithm
In Decision Maths, students learn how to solve problems involving networks, systems, planning and resource allocation. A range of methods or algorithms are studied which enable such problems to be tackled. The ideas have many important applications in such different problems as the design of circuits on microchips to the scheduling of tasks required to build a new supermarket.

Year 2 Study (A level)

Students cover 2 Pure Mathematics modules: Core 3 and Core 4 (C3 & C4). They will also cover a module in Mechanics (M1).
Topics covered in the Pure Maths modules are:
·       Algebra and Functions
·       Trigonometry
·       Exponentials and Logarithms
·       Differentiation
·       Numerical Methods
·       Coordinate Geometry
·       Sequences and Series
·       Integration
  • Vectors

These topics build upon the basic principles covered in Year 12 and extend problem solving skills.

Topics covered in the Mechanics module are
·       Modelling in Mechanics
·       Vectors
·       Kinematics of a particle
·       Dynamics
·       Statics
·       Moments

Many ideas met in Mechanics form an almost essential introduction to such important modern fields of study such as cybernetics, robotics, bio-mechanics and sports science as well as the more traditional areas of engineering and physics.
