Learning Support

The principle aim of the Learning Support Department is to offer specific support to students who have been identified as having Special Educational Needs. We are committed to helping all students reach their full potential and to be fully included in the school community.

The Department consists of the Learning Support Co-ordinator and sixteen Learning Support Assistants (LSAs).

We assess all students on entry, and use Middle School transfer information, to identify students who may need support. Support may then be given to individuals or small groups, either in class or by withdrawal for more intensive working in small groups. Teaching Handwriting Reading and Spelling Skills (THRASS) has been introduced. This is working small groups to teach synthetic phonics and give students who have struggled with the traditional system a new outlook on literacy strategies. Homework club takes place every lunchtime in B2 where help is available to all students from year 9 to upper sixth.

All staff are kept informed about students with Special Educational Needs through the SEN Register, the Learning Support Handbook. Teaching staff provide feedback to us through the usual school reporting system and also through the IEP system which involves the students, their teachers, LSAs and parents.

Parental involvement is seen as a key to the success of students in the department and we encourage a liaison between home and school.

Jenny Hebron is the Governor with responsibility for Special Educational Needs.
