Year 10 Introduction

Mission Statement

Mission Statement – To help all students develop their intellectual, social and personal to the full.

Welcome to the Year 10 web page. We hope you find that our Year 10 site provides the tools to facilitate an effective education for all of our students.

During this academic year our students will be faced with a number of challenges. We aim to guide the students through these challenges, informing them of all options and helping students to make the right decisions.

The first challenge that the students will encounter is the transition from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4. This can be a daunting prospect for some students as they embark on examination courses that demand a larger workload and coursework projects. To guide the students through this transition we employ a number of strategies. Through PLC classes, students learn about their different learning styles, how to revise most effectively, and strategies related to time management. Steps to Success guides and on-line learning resources are also available. Later in the year, we will also offer Study Support sessions and mentoring programmes for selected students whom we feel will benefit from some extra support. In addition, departments employ various strategies to support students through their examination courses.

In May, our students embark on a two-week period of work experience. We are committed to ensuring that this is a positive and enjoyable time for your child. All students will be prepared for work experience in PLC and tutorial time. In addition we host a Work Experience Parents Evening beginning of November 2008, which we would like all parents to attend.

We firmly believe that there is more to an education than lessons. We hope that by supporting our students as individuals each child can fulfil their personal and social potential. We insist on high standards of behaviour and expect much from our students. The atmosphere in our year group is extremely positive. We hope that our students enjoy school life, as this enjoyment will no doubt help them to fulfil their potential.

An outstanding facet of The King Edward VI School is the range of extra-curricular activities on offer. We believe that every student should experience at least one extra-curricular activity each year. This will help to enhance their personal, social and cultural skills as well as providing the opportunity to make new friends with students who have common interests.

To monitor our students’ progress, we endeavour to work closely with our parents to ensure our students meet their goals. The Student planner is a fundamental tool in facilitating Home – School communication. We ask parents to check the planner daily and sign weekly. Form tutors set aside a tutorial session to sign these planners and address any queries from parents.

Our Rewards’ Evenings are held on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th October 2008. All parents and students are warmly invited to attend an extremely enjoyable evening where we celebrate the successes of our students.

Our Parents’ Evening on Wednesday 1st April 2009 gives parents and subject teachers an opportunity to meet and discuss progress.

Parents receive grade updates in October, January, and June. These will keep parents informed of their child’s progress in relation to the Target Grades discussed at Tutor Days. Where students are underachieving, we employ a range of intervention strategies to get the student back on track. Students have an individual interview with his or her tutor in July to ensure a smooth transition into Year 11.

The end of year tutor report outlines the personal strengths, skills and achievements of your child. Parents will also be kept up to date throughout the year by letters and phone calls when necessary.

It is hoped that by working together as a team, the students, staff and parents can achieve our common goal. We aim for all of our students to become happy, successful and responsible.
