Year 9 IntroductionMission StatementTo help all students develop their intellectual, social and personal to the full.Welcome to the Year 9 web page. We hope you find that our site provides the tools to facilitate an effective education for all of our students. During this academic year our students will be faced with a number of challenges. We aim to guide the students through these challenges, informing them of all of their options and helping them to make the right decisions. The first challenge that the students must encounter is the transition from Middle School to High School. This is often a daunting prospect for our students who are used to being “the big fish in the small pond”. We aim to support this transition by running an induction programme that enables the students to feel part of the KEVI community before they have left their middle schools. In March our students are asked to choose their options for Year 10. We employ a range of strategies to support our students through this process. Our parents consultation evening and Options evening allow parents to meet with their child’s teachers and discuss future choices. Additionally, our Learning Focus and PLC sessions and Connexions service ensure that all students are fully informed and advised before committing their choices to paper. In May our students sit their first formal exams at The King Edward VI School. The Key Stage 3 Statutory Tests take place over the course of a week and test progress in English, Maths and Science. Once again our students are supported through this process in Learning Focus sessions, assemblies, by undertaking practice papers and lesson support. We firmly believe that there is more to an education than academic lessons. We hope that by supporting our students as individuals each child can fulfil their personal potential. We insist on high standards of behaviour and expect much from our students. The atmosphere in our school is extremely positive. We hope that our students enjoy school life, as this enjoyment will no doubt help them to fulfil their potential. An outstanding facet of The King Edward VI School is the range of extra-curricular activities on offer. The school believes that every student should experience at least one extra-curricular activity each year. This will help to enhance their personal, social and cultural skills as well as providing the opportunity to make new friends with students who have common interests. To monitor our students’ progress, we endeavour to work closely with our parents to ensure our students meet their goals. The Student planner is a fundamental tool in facilitating Home – School communication. We ask our parents to check the planner daily and sign weekly. Form tutors will set aside a tutorial session to sign these planners and address any queries from parents. Our Welfare Evening in October enables parents to meet students at an early stage and thus begin to foster an effective working relationship. Our Subject Support Evening in March gives parents and subject teachers an opportunity to meet and discuss progress. The Options Evening, which takes place on the same evening, allows parents to study options courses and speak to staff about Year 10 choices. Parents receive grade updates in November, February and July. The November progress check states a predicted End of Key Stage Level and an Effort grade. The July report includes a Form Tutor Report from all subject teachers. Parents will also be kept up to date throughout the year by letters and phone calls when necessary. It is hoped that by working together as a team, the students, staff and parents can achieve our common goal. We aim to produce students who are Happy, Successful and Responsible. |
