Duke of EdinburghDuke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh Award has been extremely successful over the years at KEVI, with around 100 young people taking part each year until 2006. In the summer of 2006, nearly 60 students completed their Bronze expedition in Northumberland, whilst 24 Silvers passed in North Wales and a group of 14 Gold’s completed an expedition around Ben Nevis in Scotland. Even though the school concentrates mainly on getting participants through the Expedition part of the award, we have plenty of young people completing the service and skills sections of the award by helping with the running of the schools unit and with the Whiteburnshank Trust. School related roles include updating this website, helping with weekend expeditions and events and assisting with after school sessions. Many Gold and Silver participants find this useful for developing and maintaining their expedition skills whilst also fulfilling the requirements of their award. This summer, as with last year the Silver award students completed their practice in the cheviots and then in June they travelled to North Wales for their assessment. Mr Whewell was ‘well impressed’ with the maturity displayed by all the young people involved- well done to you all! The Bronze award participants were split into two groups and have camped and walked in Kidland Forest and around Northumberland. The camp practice took place on 4 weekends in May and June. The final assessment expeditions went well again, with fun being had by all! Congratulations to all who completed the expeditions- now you just have to do your presentations then complete the other sections of your award. Remember to keep working on the other sections, as some who put all the effort into completing the expedition never get round to completing their full award- don’t let that be you! We're currently re-jigging and developing service opportunities at school. Currently service and skill opportunities exist for:
Out of school the service and skill optionsThe National Trust at Cragside have conservation work sessions monthly (Bronze, Silver and Gold) which is ongoing throughout the year. Consent forms and maps can be collected from the Community Office- We need to take a copy of your details, then you take the original with you to give to Ian at Cragside. Sessions are run on the FIRST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH. Please note that you should complete an average of 1 hour of service a week for the designated time. As Cragside is only one day per month, we ask that you do a minimum of one extra session ie 4 days for three month service or 7 for six months service. You will need to be dressed appropriately for the weather in clothes and footwear that you do not mind getting dirty.Any questions, please See Hayley or Mel or phone Ian at Cragside on 01669 620027. Helping in charity shops, retirement homes, sports clubs, brownies Guides, Cubs and Scouts, church groups, bell ringing clubs, after school clubs etc are other options available- find a placement yourself or ask us for assistance. Anyone wishing to help at Abbeyfields or Tritlington After School Clubs should See the Community Office for details. Parent VolunteersThe award could not run successfully without the dedicated help of a large group of parents and volunteers who give their time to help out with the award. A massive thank you goes out to all of you who have helped in the past- We hope you have enjoyed yourselves and will continue to come along on expeditions in the years to come.If you are interested in helping out, contact the Youth Department for a list of dates of expeditions and ask about the training courses available. We have put 9 people through first-aid in the last 18 months and 6 people on DofE leader training courses. Come along and see if it’s the thing for you. Other source of infoFinally, there is lots of info out there on Web pages across the country and further afield. The official DofE website http://www.theaward.org has masses of information, advice and ideas on all sections of the award- check it out to see what’s there.
