Gold & Silver Orienteering 4-12-2006

The Annual Silver and Gold Orienteering challenge 2005
Awards ceremony
Following the change of Venue to Atlee Park, Bedlington, 16 intrepid orienteers stepped into the slippy unknown that is Atlee Park, to battle it out for the honours of becoming orienteering champions 2005. Controversy and confusion prevailed to a greater or lesser degree with most teams, with the final results surprising some and shocking others! Check out the pictures and results below, and see who’ll go down in the DofE hall of fame with their names forever etched (hopefully spelt correctly this year… Sorry Sophie!!!!) into the silver and gold of the greatly revered trophies! The winners in each category received the trophy for the year and a £10 gift voucher for Wildtrak outdoor shop in Newcastle. Second place teams received £5 a piece.

Orienteering weekend 4.12.05

On the forth of December our Duke of Edinburgh group went into an orienteering competition at Atlee park near Bedlington. You had to get there at 10:15 am and depending on how good you were at orienteering depended how long you should take. It cost £1 to buy a map and we all set out in teams of 1’s 2’s and 3’s into the woods.

Our group found ourselves helplessly lost and a boy aged 13 had to help us! The objective of the day had been to improve your skills and hopefully even win the special cup and prize. Depending on which route you had your team had to go around clicking the markers. In total there were 11 markers to click, which were shown by symbols marked on the orienteering map created specially for the event. It took our group approximately 2 hours to complete the route and we were sadly disqualified, but I do think we improved our skills from our mistakes, the reason we got disqualified was that we didn’t realise which markers to click on our sheet, but we did get checkpoints 6 to 11 correctly clicked and had a really fun day. The weather wasn’t very cold and it was nice just to have a good time with friends.

There is another orienteering weekend soon and I’ll make sure I learn from my mistakes from last time and do better so I will be able to complete my silver expedition.
