Duke Of Edinburgh Silver weekend- Whiteburnshank

Febuary 4-5-2006

Meeting at Alwinton car park on the first day at around 9:30 the weather was dull and cloudy. Walking started at 10:30am and we walked onto Pass peth hill where we ran down. We travelled at approximately 3km an hour, which is excellent. After the hills it was easy to navigate and pretty straight into the forest. Stopping for lunch at 12:30 where we had sandwiches and fruit. We only ever took small breaks for the rest of the journey. It was still light when we reached Whiteburnshank at around 4:00pm and after a quick rest, we reluctantly pitched the tent ,which was surprisingly easy to put up. Then we had a nutritious tea of super noodles, Harribo and birthday cake. That night we all had loads of fun and worked on our route for the practise expedition. The only downer on the weekend was the fact there was no running water. That night we had to be in bed for 10 and asleep by 10:30, which was really easy after the busy day we’d had.

Second day

Got up early at 7:00am and had breakfast the weather was still cold, cloudy and even windy, the whole night it had been freezing. That morning we planned our practise walk and quickly cleaned the house, before beginning walking at around 10:30-11:00am. It was a bit warmer once we’d started walking but there was mud everywhere. The mud soon became a problem as one boy stuck his walking pole into it pulled it out and started walking again only to realise to the amusement of his group that the other half was still stuck in the mud! This route was shorter and we got back to Alwinton car park at 2:30pm, after we’d tackled walking down a really muddy hill without falling, though some of us couldn’t manage it could we?!

Overall this has been my favourite Duke of Edinburgh and the thing I learnt was to: walk down a muddy hill without sliding, hopefully it will come in useful.

For complicated reasons I was unavailable to participate upon this walk, so the views are from a secondary source.
