Gold & Silver Orienteering 4-12-2006Duke of Edinburgh AwardOne day walk around RothburyIn the cold, we gathered at 9:15am near Rothbury park and river and it had already started to snow. We got ourselves into 3 large groups and then gold expedition people joined our groups too. We walked up the road to the left of the car park and up a steep hill then found ourselves in a field full of sheep with snow in our eyes as we tried to walk. It was really exposed on top of the hill and every-one was cold. I think it was good to go walking in such conditions though as you can then know if your clothes and gloves are good at keeping you warm and if you’re properly kitted out.We were all happy to reach the edge of the forest and get into shelter from the snow, everywhere looked really pretty all covered in white of course we had loads of snowball fights! I then joined a bigger group which was loads of fun and we walked out of the forest up another steep hill. In total we should have walked 16k the whole day. My new group were walking at a really good pace and soon Mr Whewell was telling us we had to decide who would be the next navigator. To work out who it would be we all had to throw a snowball at his kneecaps and the two who got it furthest away would have to navigate. Thankfully I didn’t get picked. The people with the worst shot were CJ Evans and Callum Foggan, so they had to navigate. Soon we stopped for lunch at 1pm and sat down on the snow it was very cold. Of course we had another snowball fight. The started walking our group had walked well together. It was still snowing on and off but not as heavy as before. We only had around 6 k to travel which wouldn’t take us long. Soon it was my turn to navigate and I think I did this really well I approximated the time it’d take us correctly and looked out for tick off features. I think this has improved my skills as I now understand contour lines better. We reached a clearing of a car park we’d passed earlier that day as the snow was quite thick so we’d had to change our route that morning. There we had another snowball fight and aimed them mostly at Mr Whewell. We reached the car park way half an hour early. 2 things that were good on the walk:
